Changing jobs can be a really hard thing to do, especially when you enjoy the people that you work with and for. It’s important to know that their are several benefits to changing jobs. Many people often overlook the benefits to changing jobs because they are afraid to step out of their comfort zone. Applying for a new job is the easy part, but who wants to interview again? Who wants to really start over with new co-workers and wondering if they’ll like you? Or wonder if you’ll fit in, learn the new job easily, have good go-to people to call on when you have a question that needs answering, etc. There are several things that run through your mind when you are thinking about moving on, but should it stop you? I’m not saying you should continuously move and go from one job to another frequently aka job hop, but switching up things every 3-5 years will be beneficial for you until you find your forever workplace! If you’re questioning things (which I’m assuming you are if you’re reading this), I’m going to share with you some of the benefits of moving on to another employer!

Changing jobs allows you to re-establish your value! Taking all the things that you have learned from past opportunities and incorporate those into a new opportunity will make you even more valuable as an employee. Sticking around with the same employer for many years just because you have gotten comfortable, only limits you and your success. I don’t know about you, but I love a good challenge. I also love a career that recognizes a great employee when they have one and are willing to provide those challenges, raises and awesome benefits for their employees. Often times, great workers can end up punished. What I mean by that is, some employers hang onto employees that can’t handle their job well, and pile the work onto the one employee who can, which ultimately burns them out. A great employer always recognizes great staff, and will work to keep them happy knowing in turn, that employee will always return the favor by providing great work product.

You will gain new experiences and challenges. It’s probably safe to say that when you learn a job and all of it’s ins and outs, it becomes a little boring and your brain starts to go to sleep! I love the constant challenge of learning new things. I know you have heard the saying that getting somethings in life are all in who you know. Am I right? That, unfortunately, is a very true statement. Career changes will introduce you to new people, and when you work hard, those people remember you when other opportunities become available. Don’t worry about hurting your employer when you leave, you are definitely replaceable and they will find someone else to fill your shoes. Many people feel like there employer can’t make it without them so they have to stick around. Well, I’m here to tell you that they can! Don’t let worry hinder you in finding your own success! Now, I don’t say that to say burn the bridge on your way out, ha, but simply to say don’t stay because you’re worried they won’t make it without you. They most definitely will!

Staying with the same organization will limit you. When you stick with the same organization, you limit your ability and potential to reach bigger, better things! Staying with an organization because you’re afraid to move on, or even too comfortable to move on will only limit your potential in the long run! If you don’t want to do better, then don’t worry about anything that I’m telling you. If you want to do better, be better and have better for yourself, you have to be willing to take the chance. If you don’t seek, you’ll never find! Sometimes we dwell on each others success and wonder why we don’t have those same things too. Branching out to expand your knowledge will be beneficial for you. It will allow you to offer so much more when seeking other opportunities. You don’t have to switch jobs to be successful, especially when you work with an employer that has a lot of room for advancement. Some employers can’t offer that, which places a limit on what you truly know that you’re capable of.

Step out of your comfort zone! Changing jobs will allow you to become more comfortable with interviewing and negotiating salary. I actually know a few people that interview just to make sure they still have it, even when they aren’t truly looking for another job! That can be tricky though, because sometimes you get an offer that you can’t refuse and then you may just find yourself between a rock and a hard place, wondering what the best option is for you. Stepping outside of your comfort zone and/or thinking outside of the box will allow you to see your true potential. If you’re worried about where you are right now, or feel like you should be way ahead of where you are in life you will definitely get there.
